Pygmy Marmoset Habitat

Due to the Pygmy Marmosets incredibly small size, they are able to live in the very highest leaves of a tree. Due to its swift speed, and incredibly small attributes the Pygmy Marmoset is very hard to observe in the wild. The Pygmy Marmoset habitat is tropical rainforests mainly those of South America, although there are some that live in southern/eastern section of Africa. Pygmy Marmosets are mainly found in the Upper Amazon basin east of the Andes in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Northern Bolivia and Brazil. Groups of Pygmy Marmosets live in territories of less than one acre, the males guard these territories by displaying their genitals. The Pygmy Marmosets also have special scent glands for marking their territories and establishing their dominance. When two male Pygmy Marmosets from competing families meet, they will threaten each other with rapid flattening and erection of their ear tufts. They will walk near each other, backs arched, pulling back the corners of their mouths and flattening the ear tufts, what a sight to behold! The Pygmy Marmosets live in the understory layer of the forest, which is the area of trees just under the canopy. You will almost never see Pygmy Marmosets on the ground of the rainforest. The types of trees that the Pygmy Marmosets live in include:

The Pygmy Marmosets are perfectly suited for the understory layer of the rainforest; the long bendable branches allow them to swing back and forth between the trees in the canopy. The understory layer has many vines and branches for the Pygmy Marmoset Monkeys to sleep on and build nests.
