Pygmy Marmoset Diet
In the wild pygmy Marmosets rely heavily on gums and saps called exudates from trees and vines. These exudates are an important source of protein, carbohydrates and calcium. Wild Pygmy Marmosets are omnivorous, they will also eat insects and other arthropods and small quantities of fruits and other plant parts. Wild Pygmy Marmosets are event known to eat small reptiles.
The Pygmy Marmoset is specifically adapted to their natural environment, enlongated sharp incisors and claw-like nails are adaptations to the very specific diet of the pygmy marmoset - gums and other exudates. They will spend the majority of their time gouging holes intro trees with their sharp lower teeth and then gorging on the gum, sap, resin, or latex that is exuded.
Insects make up the other important part of the Marmoset diet, they love to eat grasshoppers. Pygmy Marmosets forage in the crown foliage of trees about 15meters off the ground, looking in vine tangles and vegetation for spiders, butterflies, moths, and beetles. They will spend about 60% of ther time eating gum and other exudates, and about 16% foraging for insects.
